When has there ever been a dearth for new concepts and radical ideas at a CEATEC expo? This year was no exception. My, are the inventors highly imaginative or what! The mobile phone world had a good lot of concept phones and new launches to make the consumers wonder if there’s even a single concept left under the big yellow sun that has not been tried out by these trailblazers! Fujitsu announced a Mobile Phone Design competition way back in May that provided a stage for a lot of young groundbreakers.
Around 2,000 submissions rained in and the company announced the nine finalists at the CEATEC expo in Japan. However, one contender won the grand prize hands-down for his concept ‘Gesture‘. Jin-Gwon Go, a South Korean college student is the mastermind behind this and he won an equivalent of £12,700 for his ‘Gesture’. Go’s design was not something that teased the form factor. It was a design that aimed at creating an intuitive user interface rather than giving the looks a flashy makeover.
‘Gesture’ is literally based on the user’s hand gestures. Go’s concept enables the handset to be operated using just one hand. Using gesture-based commands and advanced graphic user interfaces, most of the functions are just a hand’s gesture away. YAN’s concept titled ‘Soap’ won a runner-up prize for the Practical Category. ‘Soap‘ is actually washable and is designed for children to promote cleanliness as a way of well-being. A special award was given to ‘Chamelephone‘ designed by Hiroyuki Tabuchi. The handset can actually mimic the exact texture of the surface on which its placed, just like a chameleon.
