Microsoft gears up for battle against iPhone and Android with its Windows Phone
by Mobilemaniac on 7 October, 2009
The game is on! Microsoft has atlast entered into the war zone with its most powerful weapon: The Windows Phone. In a move aimed at swiping its rivals, Microsoft has launched a global advertising campaign promoting its dark horse, Windows Mobile version 6.5. The campaign consists of press and poster releases along with TV spots in the US, UK, Germany and France. The Windows Mobile version 6.5 software will reportedly be available in more than 30 devices in 20 markets the world over by the end of 2009. The software giant also unveiled deals with big fish like Samsung, LG, Toshiba and HTC.
The campaign has only heated up the competition, with networks like O2 and Orange launching high-end handsets like Palm Pre and Motorola Dext respectively in the coming weeks. Microsoft has been in the mobile phone market since 2002, but hasn’t been able to grab the attention of consumers like iPhone and Android phones did. According to the general manager of Windows Mobile Marketing, Kevin Keith, many did not know that Widows had a phone and that their main aim of the launch was to spread awareness of Windows Phones amidst consumers.
Windows Phones have several interesting applications in the offing, including a novel version of Internet Explorer which supports Flash. Will Microsoft emerge a winner? It’s hard to tell, but one just feels that Microsoft should have done this much longer.
