BBC considers Mobile Phone Coverage of London Olympics 2012
by Mobilemaniac on 22 January, 2010
According to Roger Mosey, the in-charge for BBC’s coverage of London Olympics 2012, BBC is considering an option to provide extensive mobile phone coverage for the event. The corporation is now targeting smartphones and high-end mobile devices for this purpose.
However, Roger revealed that a similar trial in Beijing 2008 Olympics was not successful and many people did not find it appealing to use mobile phones to keep track of the Olympics event, while on the move. He believes that the situation will be different in London and it is one of the major plan for the coming Olympics event.
Other plans of BBC for the coverage of Olympics game include HD television coverage, radio broadcast and online streaming. The budgets plans to make these a reality are also finalized. Another consideration for the coverage is the wireless devices.
Despite of the fact that many UK customers own pay-mobile television service, the concerns about the pressure such an extensive coverage put on the mobile networks in London is a thoughtful issue. The BBC Corporation failed to secure the coverage rights of London Olympics 2012 to ‘Channel 4′. But Channel 4 has not revealed their coverage plans.
