According to a survey by Mobile Data Association (MDA), around 11 million text messages are send across UK in an hour. Even the multimedia messaging service (MMS) seems to sustain the growth. This survey reveals that the people of UK still prefer messaging on mobile phones, rather than social networking through websites like Twitter and Facebook.
According to the figures, a total of 256 million text messages and 1.6 million picture messages were sent daily by the mobile phone users in 2009. Even though slightly lower in figures, when compared to the previous years, this result shows the people’s preference of Short Messaging Service (SMS) over the much hyped social networking services of the current days. In 2007, it was estimated that around 56.9 billion text messages were sent, but the 2008 report heightens this figures further to 78.9 billion.
The Chairman of MDA, Mr. Steve Reynolds said that this new statistics is the proof of the sustaining popularity of the SMS services among the people, despite of the dawn of new services. He believes it is the simplicity that allows the SMS to score well. However, many analysts see this trend as the result of the convenient tariffs available from mobile phone service operators.
Whatsoever, UK is found to have people with ‘busy thumbs’, more precisely, a bunch of ‘texting’ addicts.
