Taser Protector Family Safety Program-The New ‘Avatar’ of Mobile Phone Monitoring
by Mobilemaniac on 20 January, 2010
Perhaps, it is time to say, ‘The earth revolves on mobile phones’, instead of ‘The earth revolves on orbit’. I mean, we are so encircled with the mobile phones and it has become a basic necessity like food, shelter or water. I’m not ignoring the fact that mobile phones are useful to us in countless ways, but……….Aren’t they wolves in sheep’s skin?, at least when they come to our children’s hand?. When the child develops a bond with the device at his hand, it is natural that the influence of the parents become less significant in their life. Texting while driving, sexting, frightening messages, illegal videos, cyber-bullying and plenty are there to distract the young hearts. Since the consequences are severe, I don’t think it is wrong to monitor their interactions through mobile phones.
Taser International has come up with such a product at the recent CES 2010 show. Dubbed as Protector Family Safety Program, it enables the parents to monitor the child’s mobile phone usage and driving behaviours. With a software loaded on to the kid’s phone, the parents can block or allow, any inbound call, text or e-mails with attachments. Anything that comes to the child’s phone can be routed to the parents’ mobile phone. There are options to set a list of favourite numbers, such as the child’s grand parents or trusted friends, to whom the child can have unmonitored communications. The contents such as images, videos or audio can be also monitored.
Taser Protector Mobile Phone Monitoring Program is compatible with most of the smartphones and is expected to be in the market soon.
The Pitfalls
Taser’s Protector Phone-Monitoring Product can definitely help the parents to keep their children safe. The greatest, perhaps the only catch in this product is that it cannot work in stealth mode. That is, the parents can never hide this software from the kid. The child knows he is being monitored. There is a chance that the child develops a notion that the parents don’t trust him. It can prove harmful rather than being useful.
Even though many doctors thank this kind of technologies, they are concerned about the privacy and the feeling of distrust the child will have, when the parents use such kind of products. Generally, majority of the youngsters know what is right and safe, and there are a few, like those involve in gangs, who tend to make more mistakes. Therefore, it is always better to have a conversation with the child on the basic safety and etiquette issues before the parents jump into programs like Taser’s Protector mobile phone monitoring product. After all, you are going to ‘parent’ your kids and not ‘over-parent’ them.
