Isn’t the Sales Figure of Google Nexus One Superphone Not So ‘Super’?
February 9, 2010
Google was able to sell just 80,000 Nexus One smartphones in the first month of its availability, says a sales figure released by Flurry Analytics. This is too shallow when compared to the sales made by Apple iPhone in the initial days of its launch, during 2007.
Unlike the conventional norm to sell the mobile phone through a service provider company, Google chose the option to sell it directly to the customers through online. The sales figure proves that this strategy has not worked well, and hints Google that they should learn more about marketing a mobile handset to the consumers.
Flurry compares the sales of Nexus One with Apple iPhone 3GS and Motorola Droid. Shockingly, the figures reveal that, when the former made 80 times more sales than Nexus One in the first week of its launch, the latter did 12 times better sales.
Comparatively, Google Nexus One boasts of best features and enjoys the talk of being the best android phone launched yet. Peter Farago, Vice President of Marketing at Flurry believes that it is the extensive hype given to the phone that has pulled it down on sales sheet.
However, Google has neither revealed any sales figures, nor it commented on this low first month sales report by Flurry.
Google Nexus One, designed by HTC was launched on January 5th 2010. T-Mobile network carries it in US. Since its launch, this android mobile phone faced some device related issues, such as the ineffectiveness in connecting T-Mobile network and complaints about its touch-screen. It was also blamed for the poor customer service from Google.
Besides, it is interesting to note that Google has not spend much on advertising Nexus One, when the other manufactures have spend billions on the same. Perhaps, in one way or the other, all these may have contributed towards this low sales chart.
Google Bridges Language Barrier Across the World with Language Translator for Mobile Phones
February 9, 2010
The passion for innovation and the unceasing commitment to foster the world of communication is evident in every leap made by Google. Successively, Google keeps giving us something to rope in. The latest one, on what we got lured was Google Nexus One. Before the dust stirred by Nexus One settles, here comes another- the Language Translator for mobile phones!
Google is developing a software for mobile phones that can translate the speech in any languages in real-time. With the development of this technology, two people of different languages can converse over the mobile phone in their own languages, without the need to speak in the same language. The Google’s language translator will take care of the rest. The process is in the beginning stage and Google expects the basic version of it to get released in a couple of years.
Google’s Language Translator will transform the communication world altogether. If the software works well, then Google translator will transform around 6000 languages currently existing in the world. This can bridge the language barrier across the world.
However, this is not an altogether new technology. Google has already tried this is in computers. The language translator in the computer is now capable to translate around 52 languages, and it scans the whole documents and multi-lingual websites for the purpose. Google has also launched a voice recognition search, which enables the mobile phone users to conduct search by speaking commands, rather than by typing the keywords.
Now, Google blends these two technologies together. The new developing software is intended to listen to the speaker’s voice, interprets the meanings and phrases, and then translates them. In simple words, it analyses the package of the speech and translates them.
The Challenge:
The real challenge lies here is that, the voice, the accent and the pitch differ according to people. Everyone has there own style of speaking. Can a machine recognize and interpret the exact meaning as he said?
“At the moment, no system in the world can handle the accent change accurately.”, says David Crystal, a Professor of Linguistic at Bangor University. Many experts believe that the live translation of the voice has to overcome plenty of hurdles before it becomes a reality. “May be the Google can do it faster, but its is hard to believe that the mobile phones can understand a full language slang at a go.”
What Google has to say?
Franz Och, Head of Translation Services in Google, believes that the speech-to-speech translation is possible. “You need a blend of highly accurate machine and voice recognition technology, for this to be possible. That’s what we are working on.”, he says.
Enumerating the methods of possibility, he agrees that the changes in accent is a challenge. But, according to him, the mobile phone is personal by nature. Hence, the mobile phone must get the feel of the user’s voice, from its past usage. The more you use, the more it becomes familiar; hence, more accurate as well. Unlike the usual language translators, Google is not stressing on the tough grammar rules of the languages, instead it make use of the translated documents of the websites to enhance this system. “The more we input, the better the quality”, Mr. Och says.
Conclusion:
Whatsoever, the future seems interesting. Will this system eradicate the need of a common language? Now, English enjoys the designation of being the common language among the masses. But, with the launch of a language translator in mobile phones, a need will not arise for the people to speak in one common language. Will this system deteriorate the importance of English? Google Integrates Click-to-Call Feature for Mobile Ads
January 30, 2010
Google, the search engine giant has integrated a new Click-to-Call feature in AdWords for mobile phones. This feature allows the users to make calls to the advertisers directly, by clicking on the displayed phone number in the advertisements. This is possible in any smartphones with integrated internet browser, including Android, iPhone and Web OS mobile phones.
To elaborate, the phone number of the advertised firm will be displayed on the top or the bottom of the search query page. In order to contact this firm, just tap on the displayed phone number with the fingers. This is highly useful, especially when the user needs to make reservations in places like restaurants, while on the move. Also, since the mobile web search is location based, the displayed results and their numbers will be of those places, which are near to the current location of the user.
Google Click-to-Call Feature for Mobile Ads brings advertisers closer to the clients. An advertiser can count the number of calls made from a particular ad, in the same way they track the clicks in the websites. To enable this application, the advertisers need to set up a location extension and add the phone numbers to their AdWord account. For them, the cost for click-to-call in mobile phones is same as the cost for click-to-visit in websites. Particularly, the advertisers must ensure that they have chosen to run the ads on smartphones.
The release of Click-to-Call feature came after Google’s launch of ‘Location-based’ search and ‘Near Me Now’ feature. With this latest move, Google once again proves that they are determined to capture the mobile advertising market.

Google Nexus One vs Motorola Droid
January 24, 2010
At present, the loudest ‘echo’ in the mobile phone market is ‘android mobile phones‘. Among them, the name of two mobile handsets yell out prominently, of that of Google HTC Nexus One and Motorola Droid. Droid was enjoying the emblem of being the coolest android smartphone in the arena, till the outburst of Google Nexus One. Even though the fad follows Nexus One currently, Droid has not completely lost its sheen. Motorola Droid has already created ripples in UK market, in the name of Motorola Milestone, and Google Nexus One is yet to create. At this juncture, here is the comparison between Motorola Droid (Motorola Milestone for UK) and Google Nexus One.
Neither of these mobile phones can be said to be so appealing by their looks. When Nexus One encompasses its 3.7 inches AMOLED screen within a curved rectangular chassis, Droid does it in within a normal rectangular case. But Nexus One scores well in its display quality. Even though both comes with almost similar WVGA resolution (Droid packs 54 pixels more than Nexus One), it is the AMOLED screen that makes Nexus One a winner. The vibrancy it offers is remarkable. Droid comes with a slide out keyboard, where as Nexus One is satisfied with an on-screen one.
Motorola Droid runs on Google Android 2.0, whereas Nexus One comes with Android 2.1 version. The spotted difference in both comes in the visual experience. Android 2.1 provides a better view with enhanced 3D animations and Live wall papers. The voice-enabled search is another impressive feature in Android 2.1. Processor is another element that makes Nexus One a stronger player. The processor of Motorola Droid runs at a speed of 600MHz , where as Nexus One’s Snapdragon is a real dragon at 1GHz speed. With no lag in any of the performances, Nexus One grants an awesome performance. But this doesn’t mean Droid is slow by any means, may be by fractions.
There is no much difference in the multimedia aspect of Motorola Droid and Google Nexus One. Comparatively, the pictures they capture or the videos they play offer an equal performance. May be you can say that the AMOLED screen of Nexus One delivers a better view. Regarding the battery life, Droid offers a better 3G stand by time of 270 hours, but Nexus One will offer you only 250 hours. The talk time? Droid will offer a 6.4 hours, where as Nexus One can offer you for a 7 hours on 3G network.
Overall, Both Nexus One and Droid represent the best android phones in the market. But it is only the hardware, like Snapdragon processor and AMOLED screen that makes Nexus One a little superior to Droid.
Mobile Networks Behind Google Nexus One
January 13, 2010
It seems Google Nexus One will never be freed from ‘chasing’! Initially, the media was chasing Google Nexus One to get a glance of it before it releases. The result was innumerable leaks outs and snap shots. But, after its release, the mobile networks are continuing this act of ‘chasing’.
After a long affray, Vodafone became the first UK network to secure the deal to stock Google Nexus One. Vodafone is expected to officially launch the Google Phone during Mobile World Congress in February at Barcelona. Some sources hint that Vodafone will further delay the launch date, in order to maximise the hype.
T-Mobile, which has already secured a deal to stock Nexus One in US, is on the verge to create a similar deal in UK. A T-Mobile delegate said that they are confident to launch Nexus One mobile phone before the end of January.
Besides T-Mobile and Vodafone, the next negotiator on the dais is 3 mobile network. Furthermore, you have Orange and O2, who said that they may stock Nexus One smartphone in the future.
However the race is, Google has insisted the customers to shop for Nexus One online.
