Apple iPhone 4 – The Best smartphone of all time?
July 5, 2010
If there can be a non-living thing that can be loved more than their wives by techie men, that can push a nuclear blast to the second page of leading dailies, that can give more sleepless nights to Apple buffs than insomnia, it’s the Apple iPhone 4. This device here has taken over the blogosphere like never before – it’s been crowned by many and also knocked by a few. What is this mobile phone made of? For a start, it embraces a lot of firsts.
- It’s the first ever smartphone to have crossed the electrified high walls of Apple.
- It’s the first ever smartphone to have an antenna running along the edges.
- It’s the first ever smartphone that’s just 9.3mm thick.
The Design:
The first thing that’s sure to catch your attention is the build of the Apple iPhone 4. It’s so unlike the previous iPhones, so unlike Apple, so to speak. The handset is much thinner than any smartphone we’ve seen so far and Apple even claims that it’s the slimmest smartphone on earth. The curved back design that we’ve seen in Apple’s older iPhones has been done for. In its place is a rectangular design with an all-glass front that’s bound to be liked more by many. But the highlight of the design is the antenna, which according to Jobs has never been done before.
The metallic band that runs along the phone’s side acts as the antenna that can improve 3G, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GSM signals. Now this is something we’ve never seen before. But the same thing is also said to be posing a lot of signal reception problems for left-handers. But that’s a whole new story. The Apple iPhone 4 is available is black and white versions – the elusive white version is not available at the time of writing. The handset also houses some really clicky side buttons and a sturdy home button. The Apple iPhone 4 is a downright winner when it comes to design.
The Display:
The iPhone 4 boasts a ‘retina display’ the resolution of which is four times that of Apple’s previous models. Now this display, we have to say is superb. The display does defeat the human eye – its extremely difficult to discern individual pixels. Bravo Apple, for that scintillating display!
The Camera:
Apple has included a 5MP camera with built-in LED flash and 5x digital zoom to the iPhone 4. If this camera can take great pictures, the illumination sensor at the back lets the it take smooth pictures even in poor lighting conditions. There also is a VGA front-facing camera, for you to play around with your self-portraits. Wait, this camera also serves another purpose: video calling. FaceTime is this new feature that lets you say hi to your loved ones in a jiffy. But of course, one the other end, there has to be an iPhone 4 for FaceTime to work!
The processor, OS, gyroscope and accelerometer:
Built into the handset is Apple’s ingenious A4 processor that can take on complex tasks without exerting pressure on the battery. Then there is the built-in three-axis gyroscope and accelerometer that give the iPhone 4 some advanced motion sensing capabilities. The iPhone 4 ships with Apple’s iOS 4 – this operating system functions as the smartphone’s right hand, making it capable of a lot of magic.
iBooks, iAd and iMovie:
Moving on to the more interesting aspects of the iPhone 4, namely iBooks, iAd and iMovie. Make your own movie with the iMovie application and read all you want with Apple’s improved version of iBooks. The iAd advertising platform is the most interesting of all, using which developers can make money through advertisements apart from direct sales to users.
What else?
The iPhone is available with 16GB or 32GB options, supports 3.5G and comes with a 7.2Mps download speed and 5.8Mbps upload speed. The smartphone lets you multitask, control calls and songs with your voice, optimise the homescreen according to your mood and what not.
And at the end of the day, when you’re done looking through every nook and cranny of this device, you’re bound to walk back home wondering if you’ve come across the best smartphone of all time. But is it? Now that’s a mater of opinion.

Why should you buy an iPad?
April 7, 2010
The iPad is going to be launched in the UK on April 23. No, we mean April 24. Or perhaps April 26? Or what if Apple decides to put off the UK launch for sometime next month? Every nook and cranny of the world wide web seems to be stuffed with iPad paraphernalia. Now, for those of you who are wondering if you should actually buy the darn thing (and those who are scratching your head in front of the computer wondering if you should pre-order it,) we have a few things to say.
The iPad’s scoring points:
- It’s multi-touchscreen interface that is simply too easy to play around with – pinch, flip, swipe, poke or stretch – it gives in with ease.
- The user interface is extremely easy to use – Why wouldn’t it when it’s a bigger version of the iPhone?
- Viewing web-pages using it’s 9.7” screen is a breeze – pages resize themselves to fit the screen. So browsing using the iPad is nothing short of fun.
- iBooks, iPad’s e-reader application is simply superb. You can download books all you want and relish them in the tablet’s screen. Well, you could even end up so immersed that you forget that the thing in your hand is not a paperback. It’s true, iPad’s e-reader is the best ever. It certainly could give the Amazon Kindle night-mares.
- iWork suite is another of the iPad’s scoring points. It’s simply a set of tools that can make your work easier and faster. Preparing a presentation using the iPad will definitely be easier than a laptop.
What it lacks..
- First and foremost, the most striking deficiency of the iPad is that it does not support multi-tasking. So you can forget about listening to your favourite tracks while browsing.
- It does not support Adobe Flash, which again is a big draw back. The black squares in certain web pages tend to get on your nerves after a point of time.
- There’s no webcam – so you can’t even dream of video chats.
- The e-reader though appearing to be too perfect to complain on first sight, a few hours with it could leave you with puffy eyes – we’re not entirely convinced of the clarity.
The iPad as we know does more than our average smartphone – but hey, I’m not saying this with my whole heart. There are times when you feel that the iPhone is better. But when you get to hold the sleek device, feel the glassy touchscreen, read a few pages and type a few lines, you’re sure as rain going to fall in love with it. That’s the magic of Apple.

Apple iPad Tablet: Is it a ‘BIG’ iPhone?
January 28, 2010
The launch of Apple iPad Tablet PC by Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs in an exclusive event at San Francisco on Wednesday not only coddled the unerring senses of the drooling Apple adherents, who queue up to buy the Apple products as soon as they hit the shores, but also the tech-freaks and the avid readers.
Why I mentioned the ‘readers’ here is because Apple iPad has been launched to set ablaze the ebook market, with a new content delivery system called iBooks. Featuring the virtual books from five prominent publishers such as Hapercollins, Penguin, MacMillan, Hachette and Simon & Shuster, Apple iPad brings forth both the popular books as well as the text books. Similar to Amazon’s Kindle App, users can preview the first few pages of the book before they purchase. You can read the book in both portrait mode as well as landscape mode. You can customize the readability, and once purchased the books are directly downloaded into the book shelf.
Although the in-built ‘iBooks’ is one major feature of Apple iPad, I am not here to talk about it or its effect on ebook market. It is about the similarities between the Apple iPod, iPhone and Apple iPad. Ouch! Even the names sound alike. Its Design? Apple iPad looks like a larger iPod Touch, with a 9.7 inches LCD display. The classic 4:3 aspect ratio has revived in it with a HD resolution of 1024 X 768 pixels.
The operating system employed in Apple iPad is iPhone OS, designed to run on large screen. It boasts of features such as an on-screen QWERTY keyboard, an accelerometer, a volume adjuster, a mute button, a home button, a dock connector, access to iPod, iTunes and App stores; all akin to iPhone. While most of the apps are comparable to iPhone’s, some apps have come up with fresh user interface. And the happiest part is that Apple iPad offers a full compatibility with all the apps in the App store (that is, 140,000 apps). Apple iPad can play back ten hours of video, which is again same as the latest iPhone. Besides, similar to the Adobe Flash of iPhone, the flash of Apple iPad tablet PC too will not support the web plug-in.
Substantially, I feel Apple iPad as a nearest sibling to iPhone, an iPhone with no Phone functionality. Yes. I must tell you. The GREATEST DISAPPOINTMENT with Apple iPad is that it can’t act as a phone. Although, there is quad band GSM support and 3G, unfortunately, there is no phone functionality.
Technical Specifications and Pricing of Apple iPad:
Over to its technical specifications, Apple iPad tablet PC has a 1GHz Apple A4 high performance chip. It comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flash drive capacities. There are two models available, one with in-built Wi-Fi, and the other with integrated Wi-Fi plus 3G. The former weighs 1.5 pounds, whereas the latter weighs 1.6 pounds.
The AT & T offers you the 3G service, either by a $14.99 (250MB limit) or by a $29.99 (unlimited) pre-paid plans. The ‘no-3G’ versions are available for $499 (16GB), $599 (32GB) and $699 (64GB) respectively. You can get these in your hands within 60 days. But you will have to wait till the end of March for the 3G integrated models. They are said to be priced at $629, $729 and $829, according to their capacities. The UK prices are not yet fixed, but most probably, the Euro conversion of the US costs can be expected. Moreover, some wonderful accessories too will accompany this Apple iPad, an all-in-one communication device.
