touch_wood-mobilephonereviews.orgMobile phones made from wood! How about that, eh? The CEATEC JAPAN 2009 has yet again proved that its the perfect stage for the most groundbreaking and radical products from the electronics world. This year saw many of the top brands proudly exhibiting their ware. So, what’s hot for the mobile phone world from CEATEC? NTT DoCoMo’s Touch Wood Mobile Phones tops the list of ‘the most goggled at phones at CEATEC JAPAN 2009′. The reason? Isn’t the very word ‘wooden’ enough?

NTT DoCoMo is a Japanese company that has been experimenting with mobile phones and wood for quite sometime and have come up with two prototypes, aptly named ‘Touch Wood’ of which one is a working model. Before you start scoffing at the idea, let me tell you that no trees were felled just for building these handsets. The prototypes were actually developed from the surplus wood of trees that were culled for forest-thinning operations. This is actually very Eco-friendly, because thinned wood strengthens the health of overgrown forests and also helps in the preservation of  wood resources.

The Touch Wood prototypes were developed by NTT DoCoMo in collaboration with Olympus, Sharp and reforestation project “More trees”. The phones have a cypress wood body and before you start worrying about wood-worms and rain, note that the cases are water-proof and resistant to insects. The working model is a slider phone with a QWERTY keypad. Another interesting titbit is that no two Touch Wood phones will be alike. Can’t wait for these handsets to hit the market? Well, apparently  DoCoMo is remaining mum about commercialising these models.
