The 8 Mega Pixel War Is On

September 20, 2008

Mobile phones are no longer mere devices for communication. With the advent of innovative technologies these phones have become sophisticated multi-purpose devices. Nowadays, we have mobile phones with MP3 player, FM radio, Bluetooth, Web Browser, Camera, Video recording etc. The list seems to be endless. The introduction of camera has completely transformed the whole concept of mobile phones. Now, you can even do away with your digital cameras.

The battle begins

With the advent of camera in mobile phones, the competition stiffened and the manufacturers were on the heels to incorporate newer features in their camera mobiles to retain their position in the market and also to outshine their competitors. The story of mega pixels started with a one mega pixel camera which had a resolution of 1280 x 960. Then the 2 mega pixel camera came into the limelight with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 and the 3 mega pixel followed suit with 2048 x 1536 pixels. The growth in technical know-how paved the way for 5 mega pixel camera with 3008 x 1960 pixels resolution and a 6 mega pixel camera can outdo 35 mm quality in image detailing. The latest is the 8MP cameras that possess the indisputable quality of a professional digital camera.

The general perception is that the more the mega pixels, the clearer the pictures would be. However, resolution alone cannot yield the best picture quality. It has to be equally complemented with lens, flash and aperture features. It is the combination of all these that defines the picture quality. As the mobile phones of today are not equipped with optical zoom, you have to solely rely on digital zoom, which disintegrates with the increase in zoom. This is not the case with optical zoom. In optical zoom the image quality remains standard even with increased zoom. Thus, the manufacturers are planning to introduce optical zoom in the camera mobile phones. According to the latest buzz, Motorola plans to launch camera mobile with optical zoom very soon. Consumers are waiting with bated breath for its launch.
