What actually is a ‘Smartphone’?
Smartphones are versatile handsets that can perform functions almost like a PC. To define a Smartphone, we can say it is a mobile phone that extends PC like functions. Though the difference between an ordinary mobile phone and a Smartphone is blurred, the major evident distinction is in the way they are made and the things they can do. Large screen, web access, email, operating system and an organiser are the most common features of a smartphone. For a layman it is just a phone that has advanced features and can do much more than just making calls.
The first smartphone was unveiled by IBM in 1992, the name being ‘Simon’. In 1996 Nokia released its first smartphone - Nokia 9000. Now, the mobile market is flooded with Smartphones, each trying to excel the other in some way or the other. Smartphones have created a niche in the mobile phone market.
What do they offer?
All Smartphones come with a host of features. However, to be called a Smartphone, it should have the following features:
Internet access - To surf the web anytime, anywhere
Email - To stay in touch with your office even when you are far away from it
Personal organiser - To organise your tasks and keep up with appointments

Some navigation software - To help you in navigation
These phones run on an operating system that enables the user to access graphics, files, etc. The major operating systems used in the Smartphones are Microsoft Windows Mobile and Symbian. Businessmen are the ones who benefit the most from these phones as they can take their office along with them, wherever they go.
Be cautious
Security is of paramount concern as so many businessmen are using Smartphones. These gadgets are susceptible to hackers and vulnerable to viruses. You have to use these gadgets diligently.
The future of Smartphones looks promising and these phones are here to stay. So go ahead and capture the world and put it in your pocket.
