Global Positioning System was in vogue in many applications for decades, but its incorporation in mobile phones was a later development. In the early stages of its development it was not considered as viable to incorporate GPS in mobile phones, probably because of the cost advantage. Having come to understand the utilitarian values of the system, especially in many emergency situations, the manufacturers of the mobile phones decided to incorporate GPS to the products. The overwhelming response of the consumers resulted in a situation where all manufacturers made GPS a rule than an exception in the mobile phone.
Mobile phone is the most compact device that can be carried by the user as an intimate possession round the clock. Some of the earliest applications like handheld or car GPS are gradually getting replaced by the GPS enabled mobile phones, for the above reason. Convenience is the core factor that makes mobile phone an ideal device to be tied up with GPS. Users are able to replace the conventional navigation equipments with GPS cell phones. There was a problem that the user cannot talk over the phone while utilizing the GPS option. But this problem was eliminated in the new models of mobile phones. Talking and navigation can be carried out simultaneously.

The popularity of the device through out the world is attributed to the reason that it is the safest and reliable option in locating places or persons even in most rugged territories. It is utilized not only to navigate or locate targets but also to collect valuable information about particular locality. Details of structures and even the cost of buildings sold etc are now available through GPS enabled mobile phones. It can be set up to retrieve data stored in a particular base. Apart from individual requirements in the daily life, the device is widely used for locating missing or trapped persons in the course of relief operations in the aftermath of disasters or calamities. The state authorities and non-government voluntary organizations in many countries heavily depend on GPS enabled mobile phones to pursue effective relief operations.

Several millions handsets with innovative features are sold every year through out the world due to enhanced utility values of the products. The competitive environment prevailing in the global markets help to maintain the price level of the mobile phones making them affordable to the ordinary people. GPS enabled mobile phone has become a product with the largest customer base among all consumer electronic appliances.
