What is 3G?
3G is the acronym for ‘Third Generation’ in mobile communications that gives a new dimension to the modern life. Video conferencing, video streaming, video messaging, global positioning systems and downloadable video of news, current affairs, sports and entertainment, all are possible today and all thanks to the third generation technology. 3G provides you with the rich experience of always being connected. It offers location based services like letting you know the exact location, where you are, finding the nearest shop, bank etc.
Communication
The conventional UK mobile phones allow you to talk to each other and send text messages. But 3G takes communication to an altogether different level. You can not only talk to each other but also see the person on the other end. Let your family and friends see you when you call them. This is called video calling.
You no longer require a PC to access the internet, to blog and chat with your friends. Checking mails is not at all a time consuming process with 3G. You concomitantly, have a fast access and incredible download speeds.
Entertainment
For all your entertainment needs you can carry your tiny 3G handset, shunning all the other bulky entertainment equipments. With 3G you can shop online, access news and a wealth of other information. You can download music and listen to yours hearts content. You can even watch TV, access video clips and play multiplayer games on your 3G device.
Brief history
Initially, 1G was the watchword as it offered analogue voice capabilities with no data services. You could use your mobile phones just to chat with your friends. Then 2G network hit the market in 1992 that provided enhanced digital voice services. The researchers didn’t stop there; they came out with 2.5G with GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), which offered high transmission speeds, approximately 40 Kbps. Then the giant leap into 3G was made that revolutionised the mobile communications.
Things worth knowing
3G uses radio signals and hence can be affected by the local physical conditions that may interfere with radio signals. These signals can be affected in tunnels and wooded areas. In rare cases, it can also be impaired inside buildings. The coverage of 3G network is limited, usually rural areas are devoid of such services.
Today, majority of the camera mobile phones company are launching 3G handsets. 3G has made life comfortable and more enjoyable. The mobile industry is abuzz with the news of the creation of a 4G technology. With the rapid growth in technology, nothing can be predicted. You can wait and watch what the future holds for you.
