LG GD510 “Pop” Mobile Phone

My, does LG have style or what! Coming in the form of the GD510, or better, ‘Pop’ is a touchscreen phone that looks so darn stunning that you simply want to own it even if it turns out to be a poor fish. This mobile phone has a brushed aluminum body and is sleek with a regal air. Once you’ve gotten over the spell cast by the looks, you might have a feeling that maybe you’ve over estimated this gadget. To start with the basic features that this mobile phone offers, it has a 3” WQVGA touchscreen and a 3 MP camera. According to LG, Pop is designed for those who desire a ’simple touchscreen phone.’
Incase you’ve felt crammed with the high-end touchscreen phones that come with a wide array of ‘confusing’ features, then the GD510 could be your able crony. The handset sports an internal memory of 8GB, 3.5mm headphones jack and is capable of playing movies and music of most of the popular file formats. Internet browsing will apparently be as easy affair, with the GD510’s built-in browser.
This gleaming gizmo houses an all-in-all button in the front that can function as the menu, end or cancel. The LG GD510 “Pop” is expected to hit the European markets by October. All but the lack of 3G sounds fine. Is LG taking the ’simplicity’ motto too seriously? Hopefully, the price will not be too ‘grand’!

HTC Imagio to be launched on Verizon

Verizon has officially announced the HTC Imagio, the much awaited Windows Mobile 6.5 powered smartphone. The Imagio is Verizon’s first mobile phone to be powered by Windows Mobile 6.5 and will be available from October 6. First of its kind, Imagio will have a lot of expectations to meet up to. The handset will offer MediaFLO-based VCAST TV – something that has already peaked up the interests of many. Again, Imagio will be the first Verizon smartphone that will support this mobile TV service.
HTC Imagio features a comfortable 3.6” VGA display which has a huge 800 x 480 pixel resolution, and the user can choose programs from over 19 channels. The camera is a high-end 5MP one with autofocus and camcorder function that you can play around with. Imagio supports quad-band GSM/EDGE and also 2100MHz UMTS/HSPA if you happen to be traveling. WiFi connectivity is not missed in this gizmo and it also supports V CAST Music with Rhapsody along with a 3.5mm stereo headphones jack.
HTC Imagio will cost you $199.99 after a $100 rebate. Verizon Wireless retail locations will start selling the handset from October 20.

Mobile phones: Wolves in sheep’s clothing?

Harry stood leaning against the wall, his head bent low. There was silence all around except for the occasional call of a bird. He was in his own world, his attention focused on the tiny screen of a gadget he held in hand. “Ahem, Harry!” Called a voice. Harry didn’t heed. “Harry!” No answer. “Mr Wilkinson!” said a high-pitched voice that finally shook Harry out of the spell. “What in the name of the Lord are you doing here, boy?!! You’re supposed to be in class!” Harry turned this way and that and hung his head low, stuffing his mobile phone into his side pocket. “Now hand that mobile phone over!” Scolded Mrs McGowan with her nostrils flared. “So addicted to that darn thing! And we’ve forbidden their usage!”
An incident like Harry’s is common in the lives of 15 year old Ginny or 17 year old Ron. Have mobile phones taken over the lives of teenagers? Absolutely. There was once a teenager from Winchester who has a strange disorder. Tania (name changed) owned 14 mobile phones. She spent sleepless nights in the company of phantom chat partners. She neglected her studies, friends and parents and finally dropped out of school. Elda Steep, a leading Psychiatrist says, “Mobile phone addiction in one of the major concerns of today. It’s an obsessive-compulsive disorder in which 90% of adolescents are suffering from. Many suffer from sleepless nights due to excessive text messaging.”
Mobile phones are so entwined with our lives, aren’t they? Any average adult would find himself lost if he happened to leave behind his mobile phone at home. But the focus here is kids – Should they actually carry one to school? Yes, if they intend to use it only when required. But, a recent study revealed that one third of students used their mobile phones in classrooms – A fact with which most teachers would agree. Mobile phones have caused a great deal of damage in teenagers. Remember the rape of an 11 year old girl by four 14 year olds a few years back? The brutal incident was recorded in one of the boys’ mobile phone and passed on to almost her entire class by the next day. And can any of us forget The Torture House?
Incidents like these do keep popping up in the news papers or internet now and then, sparking off scores of debates on the bad side of mobile phones in the hands of teenagers. But they die off in a few days, with the teens doing what they were. But we actually tend to overlook the state of mind of the victims. Humiliated and angered, they could carry the scars for the rest of their lives. This is when we look down on these sleek gadgets.
Teenagers also get easy access to porn with the latest mobile phones that come with browsing capabilities and Bluetooth. Those who watched porn either streamed them directly from the internet or received them from their friends through Bluetooth. A study indicated that out of 15 teenagers who have browsing capabilities in his/her mobile phone, atleast 7 tried accessing porn sites. Another shocking mobile phone related incident that dominated the headlines a few weeks back is ’sexting.’
Yet another study indicated that messages containing sexually explicit material are spreading at a rapid pace amidst youngsters. Experts have thus been stirred to device ways to obviate the practice. Emma-Jane Cross, chief executive of Beatbullying said that it was essential that parents and schools understood the rise of sexting so that sexual bullying can be stopped completely. The study also indicated that more than one third of kids in the 11-18 year group have received “sexts” in their mobile phones that were often sent by their friends from school. This trend has alarmed experts who are concerned about the well-being of teenagers involved.
The fact that excessive use of text messaging has affected the spelling skills of students can also not be denied. We even have surveys conducted to prove it. With all this going on at a steady pace in one part of the world, a school in Michigan is planning to use mobile phones for educational purposes. Inkster Public Schools in Michigan have been successful in a trial version that involved Sprint handsets loaded with GoKnow and are looking at involving mobile phones in the classroom environment is 2010-2011 school year. Phew! A tiny ray of hope at last, eh?
Garmin Nuvifone G60 to arrive in the U.S.

Garmin International Inc and AT&T have announced that the Garmin Nuvifone G60 will be available in the U.S markets over the AT&T network from October 4th. The handset is priced at $299 for a two year contract after a $100 rebate. Expected to hit the markets by the third quarter of 2008, the Nuvifone was announced way back in January 2008. The device is multi-faceted including mobile Web services, a 3MP camera with autofocus and GPS geotagging and Garmin’s GPS navigator.
It also provides access to 3G and AT&T’s WiFi hotspots. The Nuvifone will further let you access Premium Connected Services that includes traffic updates, weather reports, fuel prices, white pages, local events and movie information for an extra $5.99 per month. And ofcourse, this gizmo is preloaded with ‘maps and millions of points of interest for North America.’ We just can’t help but wish that the Garmin Nuvifone G60 were out a bit earlier.
